Developing TrustRadius’s Illustration Style.

In the summer of 2018, I partnered with TrustRadius to develop their brand’s illustration style as well as created over a dozen illustrations for three of their pages. One of the most incredible aspects of the project was that we completed all of it in less than a months time.

Below you can learn more about TrustRadius and the overall project. Since they are still an active client of mine, be sure to check back from time to time to see updates to the case study.

The Process of Discovery

When TrustRadius came to me looking for my help in developing their illustration style, I had just started offering a new service to my clients I called “Illustration Style Discovery”.

The idea behind this service is to help research and develop an overall illustration style that fits both the client’s brand and the story they are wanting to express to their audience.

We begin this process by building a collection of illustration styles that we believe fit and flow with the client’s brand. This is usually done by enlisting the help of the client to share illustrations or styles that resinate with their brand. We then go through and pick those we feel fall in line with our goal for the brand. These are then used as a jumping off point in which we then create a few mood boards with options for the client to comment and choose from.

Once we’ve narrowed in on a few style options its time to test those ideas out on a few illustrations that we are wanting to create for the client’s brand. This gives us a good idea with what works and what doesn’t work and also produces assets we will use later.

Upon reaching the finalized illustration style we are then able to define the different use-cases for the different types of illustrations we may need for the brand. These can include but are not limited to headers, scenes, spot illustrations, icons, etc.

Crafting Their Story

Once we had the TrustRadius illustration style established it was time to put it into practice and begin creating the illustrations needed for their “Vendor Site”.

As with all illustration projects, we started with sketches, drawing out the ideas sometimes in a healthy amount of detail, and others on sticky notes to quickly iterate on ideas. We found that this was the best option for some of the more complex illustrations we had to create and worked extremely well. There were times we would jump on a Google Hangout and an idea would come to me, prompting me to grab a stack of sticky notes and draw out what I imagined placing it up to my webcam and either getting a thumbs up or having to iterate further on it.

In this case, I feel that we ended up having to spend more time in the sketching phase then normal because of how complex the ideas we were trying to portray were.

Once we finished the sketches, we began to take all of the illustrations and vectorize them (taking them into Adobe Illustrator and crafting the actual compositions). As with all of my illustration projects, we crafted the majority of the illustrations in grayscale and later (once they were complete) applying the illustration color palette we developed during the Illustration Style Discovery.

In Conclusion…

When everything was all said and done, we as a team were able to not only develop the TrustRadius illustration style, but were able to create all of the illustrations needed for three landing pages. From developing the concept of each illustration, to sketching them out, refining them in vector form and applying color we created roughly 20 illustrations in the span of two and a half weeks.

This project was a major milestone for my because of a few different reasons. The first, it allowed me to hone and develop a new service that I now offer to the majority of my clients, the Illustration Style Discovery(which has become pretty popular). It also allowed me to develop a strong partnership with the team I worked with on the project.

This isn’t the only project that we plan to work on together so don’t be surprised if you see an update on here in the near future. There is more to come from this amazing partnership.
